Review Public Safety.

Karen Hartley-Nagle

Reviewing Public Safety.

“County and City police are fighting a hard battle against violent crime that sees no borders.  That battle has cost lives, is defining our County’s future and we are far from winning it,” says Hartley-Nagle. “Most people in the County don’t feel as safe as they did ten years ago. They perceive an alarming increase in robberies, burglaries and crimes against persons and property.  We need to do what is necessary in a coordinated effort to restore their confidence in the police’s ability to protect them."

"People in New Castle County are saying they feel crime is increasing despite being informed by County officials there's a decrease. Click the following links below, the high number of incidents in the local news support why they feel this way.  Additionally, listening to people I'm meeting while campaigning, they're sharing the many incidents that are happening on their street, in their neighborhood, and to their friends and family's that don't make the news", Hartley-Nagle said.

"The increase in crime, real or perceived,  affects every area of our lives: feeling safe and secure in our homes, parks, libraries, work; our children's ability to safely play outdoors and walk to school; education system; and our health. Creating a safe community will improve our residents’ quality of life, save resources, and enhance economic and labor force development.

It's important we work together across all levels of government to address New Castle County crime.  This must be a multifaceted and multidisciplinary endeavor that integrates public outreach and long-term policy changes.  Ensuring public safety considerations are woven into all aspects of planning, programs, and policy will enable New Castle County to best position communities for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Moving forward, we need to consider new opportunities for collaboration, public engagement and education, decision making, and governance.  The time is now", said Karen Hartley-Nagle.
